Pictures at an Exhibition
Written well over a century ago, Pictures at an Exhibition still stands one of the greatest representations of the arists' canvas through sound. Composed by Modest Mussorgsky as a tribute to celebrate the work of his close friend Victor Hartmann, Pictures at an Exhibition details his meandering journey through an art gallery.
The music charts the curiosity, charm, humour, mystery, fear and triumph that a two-dimensional medium is able to evoke within the beholder with uncanny realism. The footsteps of the composer as he walks past the exhibits and the living narratives captured within the brushstrokes combine together into this keyboard masterpiece as a meditation on life and a glorification of artistic existence.
